The election season is heating up and it’s time, once again, for the Town and Country Candidates Section.
As a local newspaper of record, we focus this section on the candidacy of those who will have a more direct impact on area residents and receives less national or statewide attention. It is an opportunity for local voters to get to know the candidates who may represent them and help share information that may shape their decision.
To accomplish that, the editorial staff of the Town and Country newspaper is inviting all of the candidates running in the general election on Tuesday, November 6, 2012, to mail, fax, or email their information for publication in our Candidates Section on November 1, 2012.
In addition to a short biography that includes the candidate’s name, party affiliation and position being sought, the candidate should list any prior government-related, elected positions held.
We encourage candidates to include educational, business or other credentials and experiences that help to identify their qualifications for the position.
Most importantly, the candidate should include a brief statement outlining why he or she is seeking the position, and present a position statement on a timely subject that affects our state, county, or community. This can include national issues. Information submitted should be less than 350 words. Submissions greater than 350 words may be edited. A photo can also be included for publication.
We are inviting candidates running for the office of a position representing constituents in our coverage area. That area is Berks, Bucks, Lehigh and Montgomery counties and includes the boroughs of Bally, Bechtelsville, Boyertown, East Greenville, Green Lane, Pennsburg, Quakertown, Red Hill and Trumbauersville. Also, the townships of Douglass, Hereford, Lower Salford, Marlborough, Milford, New Hanover, Richland, Upper Frederick, Upper Hanover, Upper Milford, Upper Salford and Washington. The deadline for submitting candidate information is Thursday, Oct. 25, 2012.
Letters to the Editor regarding the upcoming November 6 election will be accepted up until October 22 for publishing in the October 25 edition. Election related letters to the editor from the candidates only will be accepted for publication up to October 29 for publication in the November 1.
Advertisements promoting candidates will be accepted for publication in the Nov. 1 edition through October 29.
Each year, there are always grumblings about why we didn’t print a certain candidate’s information for consideration. The answer is simple – they ignored our offer to provide them with the forum to present themselves to our readers.
Each year, there are Letters to the Editor that don’t get published in time for the election. The reason for that is simple as well; we didn’t receive them until after the established deadlines.
The rules for the Candidates Section and election related letters are published in the Town and Country newspaper at least four times during the month of October in order to inform our readers, facilitate the information sharing process and maintain fairness to all candidates.
