A local organization will commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Next month, the Sons of the American Legion Squadron #184 in East Greenville will host an honor ride and ceremony to remember those who died.

            "We're doing this so people don't forget," said Jack Seasholtz, 9/11 Coordinator and Commander of Sons of American Legion Post 184, who spent most of the last year planning the event.

            The event, scheduled for Friday, Sept. 11, will commence at the Quakertown Legion Post 242 and conclude at Post 184, located at 744 Gravel Pike in Palm. According to Seasholtz, it is intended to honor the memory of the 343 firefighters and more than 70 law enforcement officers who died responding to the attack in the Manhattan borough of New York City.

            The procession will escort a replica of the authentic steel beam remnant recovered from the World Trade Center, and currently on display at the local Legion post, from the Quakertown post to the destination, according to Seasholtz. The event is open to the public.

            Larry Roeder, owner and publisher of the Town and Country newspaper and a 48-year veteran of three local fire companies, will serve as the featured speaker. As a member of the Milford Township Fire Company, he first responded to Ground Zero in 2002 to assist in the recovery and cleanup.

            Registration for the event at the Quakertown post is scheduled to start at 2 p.m. The ride will start two hours later, according to Seasholtz.

            The procession will travel south on Route 663 in Pennsburg before turning right onto Route 29. It is expected to arrive at Post 184 headquarters within 30 minutes.

            Fire companies from East Greenville and Pennsburg have agreed to donate their trucks for staging at the entrance to the ceremony, scheduled to start at 5:15 p.m. It will include an introduction from Sean Davis, the post's deputy commander, and comments from guest speakers state Sen. Tracy Pennycuick, R-24th Dist., and state Rep. Milou McKenzie, R-131st Dist. Seasholtz will ring a bell to commemorate those lost.

            Later in the day, the Upper Salford Volunteer Fire Company will hold its sixth annual 9/11 tribute walk. The event – at Upper Salford Park, located at 559 Salford Station Road – remembers and honors the brave individuals who selflessly sacrificed their own lives for others, according to a Facebook post from last year.
