Let's step outside the confines of our local communities this week and travel to northern New Jersey for some conflicting views.
"I'll kill your whole ------- family. Your whole ------- family is dead. Your children, your wife, all dead … I have your face, ------------. You're dead. Dead," a protestor shouted at an ICE officer outside of Dellaney Hall in Newark, New Jersey. And, he allegedly admitted to making the vile threats following his arrest last week.
Others screamed "Grab your guns and kill yourself," and "Every cop, every fed, shoot yourself in the head."
Protesters from as far away as Portland, Oregon joined the demonstrators outside of the facility.
A Newark Council member showed up and said "Thank you for protesting. We thank you for coming down here." before she was interrupted by one woman who pulled down her mask and shouted "---- your thanks, go do something."
More than forty protesters were arrested for allegedly assaulting federal officers outside Delaney Hall to date.
The more than 10 days of protest had the New Jersey Governor saying "These actions put both peaceful protestors and law enforcement in danger."
The protests began over Memorial Day weekend, when hundreds of ICE detainees reportedly went on a hunger and labor strike over conditions inside the 1,000-bed facility. It was reported that around 300 detainees have been on hunger strike.
The First Amendment of the United State Constitution gives us the right to peaceably assemble. Is this a peaceful protest or organized mayhem interfering with the peaceful protest?
Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin denied claims of a mass strike last week saying only a "handful" of detainees are refusing meals and demanding culturally specific "ethnic" food. He later added "Well, they can go back to their country, get whatever food they want … The fact is, we're giving them the calories they want. This isn't Holiday Inn."
The Department of Homeland Security also denounced the claims by reporting "Reminder: there is no hunger strike at Delaney Hall. There are no subprime conditions," the agency said. "All detainees are provided with three meals a day, clean water, clothing, bedding, showers, soap, toiletries, and opportunities to communicate with their family members and lawyers.
"Aliens are also provided comprehensive healthcare — For many illegal aliens this is the best healthcare they have received their entire lives." Reportedly, border czar Tom Homan made a surprise visit to the center last weekend and "ate the same meal" that was served to detainees.
Who do you believe? What do you believe?
Is this the way to solve an issue?
