Dogs running wild in Hereford are killing and maiming animals and frightening residents.
Several individuals spoke at the Hereford Board of Supervisors' meeting on Tuesday, April 7, in person and via Zoom, about the ongoing issue.
Residents had asked for help before with the dogs, but because the township has no "mechanism of enforcement," in the words of Supervisor Albert Ciccarone, the supervisors' hands were tied.
A Kriebel Road resident stated that three loose dogs had recently killed one of his goats, and he called the state police, who went to the dogs' owner's home and issued a citation.
He noted that he will "protect his property" if the dogs show up again.
The owner has been cited and fined in the past by the dog warden, but did not show up for the hearing, and later appealed the decision.
The dog has also attacked and injured an alpaca, killed chickens, and cornered a resident.
State Representative Dave Maloney was in attendance at the meeting and said that he will do what he can, specifically by contacting game wardens. "You must have your dogs under your control," he said, and added that there were many options to take care of the problem.
He said that he would have a game warden to the dog owner's property within days.
Because the dogs are loose some of them have been hit and killed on township roads in the past.
In other news, Congressman Ryan Mackenzie, State Senator Tracy Pennycuick, and State Representatives Milou Mackenzie and Dave Maloney attended the meeting to honor three members of the Hereford Fire Department who have a collective 122 years of service to the community.
Leroy Marks Jr., Harold Albitz, and Thomas Spaar received certificates and challenge coins from Ryan Mackenzie, and citations from Pennycuick, Milou Mackenzie and Maloney.
The township supervisors also passed resolutions for each of the men recognizing their ongoing commitment and service.
