Administrators in the Upper Perkiomen School District set an ambitious maintenance schedule for the summer. Crews accomplished their goals, including work at four schools.
Work to repair the wastewater treatment system at Marlborough Elementary and roof repairs at three other schools were finished. JP Prego, chair of the school board Facilities Committee, described it as a productive summer.
Last week, the school board approved four change orders totaling $28,273 related to the wastewater treatment work included in the Aug. 28 workshop meeting agenda. Earlier this year, the members approved a contract with Worth and Company for $205,805.
Roof repairs at the high school, the 4th & 5th Grade Center and Marlborough Elementary signify the completion of a multi-year project, according to Prego. The board previously approved a base bid of $383,250 for the work. Administrators initially targeted the schools with roofs that received grades of D or F from a survey completed by Mark J. Sobeck Roof Consulting Inc. for initial work.
In personnel news, the board approved the resignation of Candice Kennedy, a paraprofessional. It also approved the appointment of four professional staff members for the current school year, including three existing staff members.
Brien Kalnoski was approved as a middle school/high school Social Studies teacher. Hillary Miller was appointed a middle school reading specialist. Lyssa Busolits will work as a middle school math specialist.
The members also approved David Kelly as a long-term physical education teacher at the high school, through Feb. 25.
They also voted to appoint three support staff employees for the current school year. Emily Ziegenfuse will work as a paraprofessional, while Faith Kiefer was approved as a cafeteria/playground aide. Phoebe Megally has been hired as a part-time food service worker, according to the meeting agenda.
The board also approved leaves of absence for two employees: Christopher Bieler, through Feb. 25, 2026, and Michele Martin, as needed.
According to Solicitor Kyle J. Somers, the board met in executive session immediately prior to the public meeting. Somers announced that the members discussed issues related to collective bargaining with the Upper Perkiomen Education Association, a confidential student matter and school security.
