Dr. Thomas E. Persing, a dedicated educator who was extremely supportive

of his family, passed away peacefully in his home on June 6, 2025, at the age of 93. Thom, as he liked to be called, was born in Shamokin, PA to the late Joseph and Edith (Bixler) Persing.

            Thom lived a life full of purpose, passion, and love for his family, his community, and his fellow educators.

            Dr. Persing graduated from Shamokin High School in 1949 and attended Bloomsburg University, where he earned a Bachelor's Degree in Biology in 1955. He then served in the United States Marine Corps from 1955 to 1957; continuing in the Reserves earning the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

            Upon returning from his military service in 1957, he began his teaching career as a biology and chemistry teacher at Allentown High School then at Dieruff High School, where he was one of its founders. His commitment to education led him to pursue further studies; he earned a Master's Degree in Education from Lehigh University in 1960 and his Doctorate from Penn State University in 1967.

            In 1971, Dr. Persing took the helm as Superintendent of Wyomissing School District for three years before moving on to a long and impactful tenure at Upper Perkiomen School District, where he served as superintendent from 1974 until 1993. He left a lasting impact on countless students, faculty members, and administrators. After his retirement, he continued to support the educational community as an interim superintendent for several other school districts and served as the Director of the Eastern Region of Distinguished Educators.

            In addition to his administrative roles, Thom shared his love for sports by coaching football at Muhlenberg College, as well as football, wrestling, and track at both Allentown High School and Dieruff High School. In 1988, Thom was inducted into the District XI Wrestling Hall of Fame.

            Thom was married to Martha A. "Martie" (Molchan) Persing for 65 wonderful years until her passing in 2021. Together, they created a loving home filled with laughter, learning, and support.

            He is survived by son, Thomas Scott Persing and wife, Clare; Kris, wife of Stewart Waters; granddaughter, Khymberli, wife of Shane Spikes; as well as four great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by six siblings. His family was the light of his life, and he took immense pride in their accomplishments and happiness. He also found joy in the simple pleasures of life, whether it was playing handball, delving into history books, engaging in spirited games of pinochle, golfing, or setting off on new adventures while traveling. His vibrant spirit and zest for life left an indelible mark on all who knew him.

            A viewing will be held at Mann-Slonaker Funeral Home, 222 Washington St., East Greenville, PA on Wednesday, June 11, 2025 from 6-8 p.m. and on Thursday, June 12, 2025 from 9-9:45 a.m. Service will follow on Thursday at 10 a.m. Interment will be private.
