The latest legal notice sent to the Town and Country states that community members who still want to be heard regarding the proposed changes at the Perkiomenville Quarry have until May 24 to submit written comments, objections, and requests for an informal conference and/or public hearing by mail to the Pottsville District Mining Office, located at 5 West Laurel Boulevard, Pottsville. The office phone number is (570) 621-3118.
Submissions must include name, address, telephone number, and a brief statement as to the nature of the objection(s). The previous deadline was April 7.
On March 24, at Marlborough's township building, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection held a public hearing on Heidelberg Materials' request to expand mining operations and to use solid material to fill the quarry instead of water.
The latest notice stipulates that while Heidelberg Materials still wants permission to use reclamation fill for post-mining land use, filling the quarry with water "would continue to be an option."
The revised application is available for public review at the Montgomery County Conservation District located at 143 Level Road, Collegeville, PA 19426, during regular business hours of 8:15 a.m. to 4:15 p.m., Monday through Friday.
As part of the approval process, the DEP will decide if the quarry's request meets environmental standards.
