Richard James Thomas
2024-12-28

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Richard James

Thomas, affectionately known as "Little Richard," who peacefully passed away on

Monday, December 23, 2024, at the age of 92.

Richard was a lifelong resident of Pennsburg, PA, and originally hails from Emmaus, PA. He was the beloved husband of Dolly (Ott) Thomas for an enduring 71 years.

Born to the late Earl and Flossie (Keyser) Thomas, Richard lived a full and vibrant life, touching the hearts of many in the community. His entrepreneurial spirit and love for food and family led him to build a successful legacy. Richard began his career as a food vendor at the Qmart and Zerns markets, where he spent over 50 years providing delicious meals to locals and visitors alike. His passion for this work eventually blossomed into a family-run business, with Richard, Dolly, and their children actively participating in fairs and festivals.

A true icon in the area, Richard was also the former manager, primary food vendor, and owner of the Kutztown Folk Festival, a beloved cultural event that drew visitors from near and far. In addition to his food business, Richard was involved in numerous other ventures, including the Pennsburg Diner, a local carwash, and several other businesses throughout the Upper Perk Valley.

Richard's legacy lives on not only through his many businesses but also through his devotion to his family, his work ethic, and his deep ties to the community. He was known for his kindness, generosity, and unwavering dedication to those he loved.

Richard is survived by his loving wife, Dolly; his sister, Faith Sideris; his children: Robin and Donald Laudenslager, Sandra and David Higman, and I.V. and Christine Thomas; his 19 grandchildren, and 28 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his children, Barbara Niemi and Robert Thomas, as well as his siblings, Earl, Carl, Eleanor, Lorraine, Doreen, Wayne, and Shirley.

A man of wisdom and character, Richard was known for his favorite saying: "Remember your friends going up the ladder, you may need them coming down." His generosity, hard work, and kindness touched the lives of all who knew him. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends.

            Services will be held privately.
