Powanda Resigns as Washington Twp. Supervisor’s Chairman
Written by Mary Gibbs Kershner, Correspont
2024-08-14

At the Washington Township Board of Supervisors workshop meeting last Thursday night, Tom Powanda resigned as township chairman.  Vice Chairman Dave Moyer will now be township chairman for the remainder of the year.  Powanda will assume the position of township vice chairman.

Previously, Moyer served as township chairman for several years.  He is well known for his courtesy to the public.

The supervisors discussed Camp Camino's plans for agricultural production on most of the property located along County Line and Kutztown Roads.  Pierce Keating, the owner of the property, noted he never intended to construct houses on the remaining land that surrounds the Camp Camino site.

Camp Camino is a proposed camp for disabled children.  It will comprise approximately 37 acres.  The entire property is approximately 163 acres.  The main house and several renovated barns are located on approximately 10 acres.  The remaining land of at least 100 acres will be used for agricultural production.  The proceeds of the agricultural activity will be donated to service organizations that provide food to people suffering from food insecurity.

The supervisors discussed a new and improved phone service with Jim Gallagher, a representative of Galco phone systems.  Gallagher explained a new phone service with new phones would pay for itself.  It requires a 36-month contract and a one-time charge of $3,800.  The new phone service will include updated 911 emergency assistance.

The supervisors will make a decision on new phone service shortly.

A bid of $11,770 was accepted by the supervisors from Besfort for plumbing services at the new public works building.  Affordable Concrete will perform work at the new building for approximately $9,200.  RJ Electric will perform work on the township gate in the amount of $750. There is no information concerning gas service at the new building.

The detention basin at Kubbler Court and Weinstiger Road needs to be repaired.  The property owner where the detention basin is located is required to make the repairs.  If the repairs are not done soon, the township will contact the township engineer, LTL Consultants, concerning the matter.

The township supervisors will conduct a fall road inspection on September 30, at 8 a.m.
