Quakertown's journey through the American Legion post season ended with consecutive losses within 24 hours at the Mid-Atlantic Tournament. After opening the tournament in Morgantown, WV, with victories over champions from West Virginia and Ohio, the team lost to two perennial powers from New Jersey and Delaware, respectively.
Brooklawn, N.J captured its 20th national regional title Sunday. It defeated Paxton, the No. 2 team from Pennsylvania, 10-3 in the title game on Dale Miller Field at Mylan Park.
The Blue Jays had their eight-game winning streak snapped in the tournament's winners' bracket final on Friday, Aug. 4. Brooklawn, a 31-time New Jersey state and four-time World Series champion, needed only five innings to post a 13-3 victory.
Quakertown managed just five hits. Brandon Pierce delivered a two-run single in the top of the first inning to put his team ahead 2-0.
However, the Ballers responded by scoring in their final four at-bats. Nick Spaventa led off the bottom of the second with a solo home run.
R.J. Mustaro delivered an RBI single up the middle and Joe Bogart followed with a sacrifice fly off Tanner Clancy to put his team ahead for good.
In the third inning, Brooklawn built a six-run lead, scoring five of those runs on three consecutive run-scoring hits. Mustaro drove home two with a single to right field, Flash Krzywicki followed with a two-run double to left center, and Matthew Leahy's hit to left capped the scoring.
The Ballers added two additional runs in the fourth and fifth innings, invoking the 10-run rule in the fifth on Mustaro's sacrifice fly.
Cole Reich, Ethan Beil, Ty Everitt and Thomas Kozlusky had Post 242's other hits. In the fifth, Reich drove in Kozlusky–who had doubled–with a ground ball.
The following afternoon, a 9-4 loss to the Delaware state champions ended Quakertown's season. Wilmington Post 1 scored five runs in the top of the fifth inning to extend a one-run lead.
Ty Everitt absorbed the mound loss for the Blue Jays. The starter was charged with six runs on seven hits in four-plus innings of work.
Chase Fleming's two-run single off reliever Daniel Qualtiera triggered the rally. Post 1, which won the World Series in 2018, delivered four hits during the flurry.
Brayden Schuler went 3-for-3 with a double and scored two runs for Post 242, which pulled within 4-3 in the top of the fifth inning. Reich added two hits and scored one run.
The Blue Jays opened the tournament with a convincing victory over the West Virginia champion on Wednesday, Aug. 2. Reich and Pierce both finished with two hits, including a homer, in a 13-4 victory over Beckley, W.V.
Reich drove in three runs and scored four. Pierce drove in a game-high four runs.
Qualteria contributed two hits and scored three runs out of the leadoff spot for Post 242, which scored four runs in the bottom of the second inning off Bash starting pitcher Brayden Stottleyer to overcome a 2-0 deficit. Beil's two-run single highlighted the outburst.
A two-run single by Brayden Schuler in the fourth inning highlighted a three-run rally. One inning later, Pierce delivered a three-run homer. Reich did the same in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Vincent Pellegrini earned the mound victory, falling one out short of a complete game. He allowed four earned runs on 10 hits over 6 2/3 innings.
On Thursday, Post 242 parlayed a four-run outburst in the first inning to defeat Richland, Ohio in the winners' bracket semifinal. The Pennsylvania champions, who had just five hits, took advantage of three errors to record a 6-4 win.
Qualteria notched a four-out save to secure the victory. Peyton Myers earned the mound win despite allowing four runs on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings.
Ty Everitt delivered a two-run double in two runs in the bottom of the first inning for the Blue Jays, who took an early 4-0 lead. He also stole third and scored on an error by the catcher during the inning.
Caleb Everitt added an RBI single to right field to cap the rally. The hit scored Schuler, who had walked.
Quakertown took advantage of two Richland errors to add two unearned runs in the second. Beil drove in a run on a bases-loaded walk.
The Ohio champions rallied for three runs in the top of the fifth inning. Adam Deitschel delivered a double with the bases loaded.
