Ethan Beil led Quakertown's American Legion team to its first state tournament in franchise history and a berth in this week's Mid-Atlantic Regional Tournament. He received the Most Valuable Player award last week in Latrobe after going 8-for-13 at the plate with seven home runs and recorded 13 RBI, scoring nine runs and working six walks. Vinny Pellegrini was named the outstanding pitcher.
The Blue Jays, who went 5-0 during states, were scheduled to take on Berkley Post 14 – the West Virginia champion – at 4 p.m. on Wednesday in the national regional tournament in Morgantown, WV. The winner advances to the American Legion World Series, slated for Aug. 10-15 in Shelby, N.C.
Bell hit two homers and drove in four runs in the state-title clinching 14-10 victory over Paxton at Rosa-Oglietti Park. Cole Reich and Peyton Myers each delivered three hits for Post 242, which scored five runs in the fourth inning to extend a 6-5 advantage.
Two days earlier, the team rallied in the top of the seventh inning to advance to the championship round and qualify for the national regional. Quakertown scored six runs to defeat Paxton 8-3 on Wednesday, July 26 in the state tournament's winners' bracket final.
Quakertown scored six runs off Paxton reliever Alex Yarrish during the inning, sending 11 hitters to the plate and taking advantage of two outfield throwing errors.
Cooper Nattison opened the seventh inning with a single to right field. He moved to second on an errant throw by the right fielder to first base.
Five hitters later, Brandon Pierce's RBI single to left field snapped a 3-3 tie. Beil followed with a run-scoring hit. A second run scored on the play due to an errant throw by the left fielder.
Ty Everitt's two run-single capped the outburst and made a winner out of Nattison, who allowed three runs in six innings on seven hits and four walks.
Danny Qualteria worked a scoreless seventh inning to save the game. He faced four hitters, striking out two.
At the plate, Nattison finished with two hits and scored twice for Quakertown, which scored single runs in the top of the fourth and fifth innings to go ahead 2-1. However, Paxton rallied for two runs in the bottom of the fifth to regain its lead.
On Thursday, July 27, the Blue Jays posted their fifth consecutive overall victory. They used four home runs to overcome a shaky defensive performance and register an 8-6 victory over Falls.
Beil homered twice and drove in three runs. Pierce and Reich also homered. Pierce and Beil went deep on consecutive at-bats during the fourth inning to highlight a four-run rally.
Reich's two-run homer in the top of the fifth inning snapped a 6-6 tie. Reich added two hits and scored two runs.
Everitt tossed the final 4 2/3 innings in relief to earn the mound victory and eliminate the Region Three representative. He allowed three hits and two unearned runs while striking out six.
Five Blue Jays errors led to five unearned runs by Falls, from the Lower Bucks League. Pierce, their starting pitcher, was removed with one out in the third inning after allowing four runs (one earned) on two hits and three walks.
