Quakertown's American Legion baseball team continued its dominant run through the postseason. Seven days after capturing the Region Two title, the team qualified for the winners bracket final at the state tournament in Latrobe by winning its first two games.
With a win over Paxton, from Region 4, in the winners bracket final, scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Wednesday at Rosa/Oglietti Field, the Blue Jays can advance to Thursday's championship round and qualify for the Mid-Atlantic Tournament.
On Monday, Vincent Pellegrini pitched Post 242 to victory in the first round of states. He went the distance in a 4-0 win over Greater Pittston on Tuesday.
Pellegrini worked around three hits and four walks during the first game of the tournament. He struck out seven.
Caleb Everitt delivered a two-run single in the bottom of the sixth inning to highlight Post 242's three-run rally. He stole two bases before scoring on an error by the Greater Pittston catcher.
Ty Everitt scored twice for Post 242. He crossed the plate with Ethan Beil on Caleb Everitt's hit and came home in the second inning on an RBI grounder by Brayden Schuler off Greater Pittston starting pitcher Hunter Lawall,
Greater Pittston, the Region 5 champions threatened in the top of the fifth inning. Down 1-0, they loaded the bases on three consecutive two-out walks by Pellegrini. However, he struck out pinch hitter Troy Davis to end the inning.
The following day, the Blue Jays needed only five innings to register a 10-0 victory over Charleroi, from Region 6. Cole Reich went the distance on the mound, allowing just one hit and three walks while striking out four.
Beil homered twice and Cole Reich finished with two hits, including a grand slam to highlight a six-run rally in the fourth inning. Both finished with four RBIs and scored two runs.
Thomas Kozlusky finished with two hits and drove in two runs. Brandon Pierce doubled and scored a run.
Quakertown advanced to states by capturing their first regional title since 2016. As the last undefeated team in the tournament, it failed in its first attempt to earn the championship with a 6-0 loss to the Bethlehem Wanderers on Wednesday, July 19 at Boyertown's Bear Stadium.
However, they needed only six innings in the second game to post a 12-2 victory. A nine-run rally in the top of the sixth inning invoked the 10-run rule.
Post 242 sent 14 hitters to the plate during the frame. Everitt's two-run double highlighted the offensive explosion. Beil delivered an RBI double.
Pierce, Ty Everitt and Tanner Clancy each contributed run-scoring hits. Danny Qualteria stole home.
Brayden Schuler went 3-for-4 at the plate and drove in two runs to pace its 12-hit attack. Caleb Everitt finished with two hits, scored twice and three RBIs for Quakertown, which rallied for three runs in the top of the fourth inning off Wanderers starting pitcher J.C. Spinosa to overcome an early 2-0 deficit.
Schuler's two-run single down the right-field line put his team ahead for good. Caleb Everitt's RBI hit earlier in the fourth snapped a stretch of 10 consecutive scoreless innings.
Everitt went the distance on the mound. He allowed two runs on three hits while issuing two walks and striking out three.
In the early game, Bethlethem's Aaron Clark handed the Blue Jays their initial loss of the tournament. He tossed seven shutout innings, scattering six hits and one walk while striking out five.
