Braves Fall into Elimination Round of Berks Playoff Tourney
Written by Staff Report
2023-07-12

The Upper Perk Kiwanis Youth Legion team slipped up in the Berks County League playoffs Tuesday. Now the team must post four consecutive wins to defend its title.

The Braves were defeated 10-8 by Daniel Boone in a second-round playoff game at Bonekemper Field. They committed four errors that lead to three unearned runs.

Topher Burns absorbed the mound loss in relief. He was charged with three runs (two earned) in 4 2/3 innings.

The visiting Mavriks scored twice in the sixth inning to snap an 8-8 tie. Anthony Howells earned the victory in relief despite permitting three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Anthony Manogue tossed a two-inning save to secure their spot in Wednesday's winners' bracket final.

Upper Perk was scheduled to return to Bonekemper Field on Wednesday night to take on West Lawn. Another loss will knock it out of the tournament.

Grayson Sabo led the Braves with two hits, two RBIs and three runs scored against Daniel Boone. Nate Schramm drove in two runs.

Jordin Dice, Zane Saeger and Burns each delivered one of the team's 10 hits and drove in a run. The Braves stranded 11 base runners.

Ryan Sink, Upper Perk's starting pitcher, was removed in the third inning when the Mavriks rallied for seven runs. Five of the runs were earned.

Upper Perk opened the league playoffs with a dominant victory over the Boyertown Bear Cubs on Monday as Cole Pierce pitched the team to an 8-1 victory at Bonekemper Field.

In six innings, Pierce did not allow an earned run. He scattered three hits and issued four walks while striking out eight.

Benjamin Godshall went 2-for-2 at the plate and scored two runs for the Braves, who led 8-0 through five innings. Jackson Long and Sink each singled twice and scored a run.

Nate Schramm scored twice for Upper Perk, which scored twice in the third and fourth innings before rallying for four additional runs in the fifth inning.

The Braves ended the regular season last week with a victory last week. They scored single runs in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings to post a 6-4 win over the Boyertown Grizzlies on Wednesday, July 5.
Upper Perk took advantage of four errors by the Grizzlies to rally from a 4-3 deficit. Pierce delivered a triple and drove in two runs.
Zach Adam delivered one of the team's six hits, scored one run, and drove in another for the Braves, who scored four unearned runs. Brody Weiss scored two runs.
Burns hurled two shutout innings in relief to earn the mound win. He allowed only two hits and one walk on 29 pitches.
Long tossed five innings for the Braves. The starter allowed all four runs on four hits while walking four and striking out four.
