With six games remaining in the regular season, the Upper Perk Kiwanis Youth Legion team has yet to clinch a spot in the Berks County League playoffs. The team has plenty to play for besides defending its league championship.
The Braves, who are looking to earn their third straight trip to the Youth Legion state tournament, will host a state regional tournament next month. However, a league loss to Daniel Boone on Monday complicated its bid for a playoff berth.
The Mavriks rallied for four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to post a 9-6 victory. Ryan Kriebel's run-scoring single during the inning, off Jackson Long, put them ahead for good. Long absorbed the loss, permitting five runs (three earned) on five hits in 1 1/3 innings.
Daniel Boone rallied from a 6-3 deficit, scoring twice in the bottom of the fifth inning to trigger the comeback. The team registered 11 hits off three Upper Perk pitchers and took advantage of two errors to score two unearned runs.
The Braves offense made the most of four hits and six walks. Brody Weiss delivered two hits and drove in a run during their third loss of the season. Jordin Dice delivered a hit and an RBI. Benjamin Sands had a hit.
Cole Pierce scored a run and drove in another. Zane Saeger scored two runs.
The Braves, who are tied for first place in the East Division, responded to their second loss of the season with an 8-0 victory over NorChester on Wednesday, June 21. Ryan Sink scattered four hits and struck out four in six innings of work to earn the mound win.
Dice went 3-for-4 and drove in three runs for the team, which finished with 10 hits. Long contributed two hits and two RBIs.
Benjamin Godshall posted two hits, scored a run and drove in another for the Braves, who rallied for six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to extend a 2-0 lead. Leadoff hitter Zane Saeger scored a run and drove in another while stealing a base.
