Plenty of Competition in Local School Board Races
Written by Larry Roeder, Editor
2023-05-10

Local school board races in Tuesday's primary election offer voters a wide range of candidates.  With the option to cross-file, running on both the Democrat and Republican ballot, some races could be determined next week.

Ten candidates, all cross-filed and running for five open positions on the Upper Perkiomen School Board, are running under two different banners.  Candidates running under the "Team UP for Education" are incumbent Peg Pennypacker, and Christina Brathwaite, Leah Cianfrani, Jacque Porterfield, and Karie Ulrich.

Running under the "UP to the Challenge" banner are Sara Bieber, Liz Fluckey, former Upper Perkiomen School Board Director John Gehman, Mike Long, and Trina Schaarschmidt.

All candidates have cross-filed and will appear on the Democrat and Republican ballots.

In the race for Boyertown Area School District Director, in Region 1 where one open position exists for a two-year term, Marianne Scott, Michelle Sweisfort, and Lindsay Warmington have all cross-filed to appear on both party ballots.  For one open position for a four-year term, Krista Elyse Arndt and Christine E. Neiman have both cross-filed for the position.

Two open positions exist in Region 2 where all four candidates have cross-filed.  The candidates are James H. Brophy, Lisa C. Hogan, Joseph Piccione, and Roger Updegrove.

For two open positions in Region 3 Matt Hook, Wendy Kratz, and Brad A. Updegrove have cross-filed.  Jessica T. Skelton is running on the Republican ballot.

For Quakertown Area School District Director, David O'Donnell has cross-filed for the four-year term position. For two positions for a four-year term in Region 2, incumbent Chris Spear has cross-filed and incumbent Jonathan Kern is running on the Republican ballot and Amanda Hahn is running on the Democratic ballot.

In Region 3, two positions are open for a four-year term, Joseph Carl Lyons has cross-filed.  Also on the Democratic ballot is incumbent Brian K. Reimers.  Incumbent Mike Post is also running on the Republican ballot.

Readers are reminded to vote on May 16.
