Now that work has begun on the Route 29 bridge in Pennsburg and with the closing of that main thoroughfare between that borough and Red Hill, it seems like a good time to take a look at how we drive.
Drivers familiar with the area will find alternate routes on local streets and roads. Drivers unfamiliar with the area will either follow PennDOT's approved detour or will try to find their ways around streets they are unfamiliar with. In either case, drivers may drive past the southbound Route 29 detours until they realize that Tenth Street is closed and their only alternative is to turn around in the small parking lot of a nearby business.
An inconvenience and danger to the customers of the local business and also a danger to pedestrians who will be using the parking lot as access to a temporary foot-bridge to bypass the closed span.
Read the signs – the road is closed!
Access to the following business along Main Street, between Eighth Street and Tenth Street will still be available. They are open. Please show your support for them by continuing to patronize them.

And, please slow down. Especially when you are navigating your way through local streets and other roads. They are alternate routes because you don't normally drive them. Keep your distance from the car in front of you and watch for children. Stop speeding and tailgating. Leave your home a few minutes earlier and give yourself enough time to get where you're going.
You're not on Main Street anymore. Drive with caution and respect the neighborhoods you will be passing through.
