If you use an automated teller machine (ATM) beware.
A couple of years ago skimming devices were found in a few machines in our area. A skimming device is something illegally installed on ATMs, point-of-sale (POS) terminals, or fuel pumps to capture data or record cardholders' PINs.
According to the FBI, criminals use the data to create fake debit or credit cards and then steal from victims' accounts. It is estimated that skimming costs financial institutions and consumers more than $1 billion each year.
It's back. This time the theft devices were found in several Montgomery County convenience stores in Abington, Ambler, Cheltenham, Conshohocken, Norristown, and West Norriton.
Police also found a small camera placed above the keypad to capture the user's personal identification number. So, while the skimmer is stealing the information from your card the camera is capturing the information you're putting on the keypad.
It's only a matter of time before the identity thieves make their way back to our area.
Officials recommend that you always cover the keypad with your hand when typing in your PIN. They also recommend that you check for any suspicious items around the keypad and card slot before you begin your transaction.
When using an ATM or gas pump remember that the skimming device is often an overlay that someone sticks into the card reader, so it won't be sturdy. Also, check to make sure the machine is secure. Check to see if there are loose wires or a camera over the top of the keypad. Also, check to see if the keypad is "spongy" because, in some cases, keypad overlays are used to record PINs by recording your keystrokes.
You may want to choose ATMs in a well-lit, indoor location that are less vulnerable targets.
Some fuel pump skimmers are attached to the internal wiring of the machine and aren't visible to you. Consider using a fuel pump that is closer to the store and in direct view of the attendant. These pumps are less likely to be targets for skimmers. Also, consider paying inside with the attendant, not outside at the pump.
Look for any indicators that there is a skimming device involved.
If you see something suspicious, notify the police immediately.
And, always check your bank statements closely and report transactions you did not make or approve to your financial institution so that the thefts can stop and the recovery process begin.
