Whenever the old bridge in Pennsburg that carries Route 29 over the long abandoned railroad bed below is closed remember that the businesses along Main Street will still be open.
Officials are quick to announce that Main Street will be closed from Eighth Street to Eleventh Street on ____________ (fill in the blank), but remember that there are at least 13 businesses in the stretch from Eighth Street to Tenth Street that you will still have access to. I hope that the signage at Eight Street in Pennsburg will note that the road is open for "Local Traffic" so that customers will not be afraid to patronize those businesses.
There are times when we need to put emphasis on what's open when long-term road projects are planned. We must let folks know that customers will still have access to these businesses. "Well everybody knows that" is not an acceptable response. How do they know that? Will the signage reflect that people still have access to those businesses or should those businesses plan to shut down now? Is PennDOT aware that the businesses will remain open and the signage should be appropriate to that?
Heck, people live on Main Street between Eighth and Tenth Streets and they're not going anywhere.
During this extended period of time for the bridge removal and construction, between Tenth and Eleventh Streets, these businesses must depend on their customers knowing that they will still have access to them to still be in business after the construction is over.
They are and will remain open for business.
