Upper Perkiomen's girls soccer team will play for a state championship. On Wednesday, the team advanced the PIAA Class 3A title game with a 3-0 victory over Greencastle-Antrim at Northeastern High School, near York.
The undefeated Indians (25-0-1) are going for their first state title in program history at 4 p.m. on Friday. They will take on Moon Area at Eagle View Middle School in Mechanicsburg.
Mike Freed will coach his final game for Upper Perkiomen. He is retiring after 14 seasons leading the team.
Sara Edwards scored -- increasing her school record season total to 36 -- against the Blue Devils for the Tribe, which has already won the Pioneer Athletic Conference and District One titles this season. Lauren Powers assisted both goals. Morgan Sweed's goal late in the first half opened the scoring.
Upper Perkiomen's final opponent has posted a perfect record and allowed only two goals all season. The Tigers (25-0) -- the defending PIAA Class 4A champions -- extended their winning streak to 35-games with a 2-0 victory over Mars, the three-time defending PIAA Class 3A champions on Wednesday night. Moon Area ended the Planets' 80-game winning streak in the District Seven title game with a 1-0 win on Nov. 5.
The Tigers are shooting for their fourth state championship. They won consecutive 3A titles in 2016 and 2017.
The school, located halfway between Pittsburgh and the Ohio border, features six players with at least six goals and five with at least 10 assists. Three players, including leading scorer Hailey Longwell, plan on continuing their soccer careers at Duquesne University.
