12U Indians Playing for State Title
Written by Staff Report
2022-07-06

The Upper Perkiomen 12U team is playing for a state title. The Indians are scheduled to take on host Springfield (Delco.) on Wednesday afternoon in the Cal Ripken Southeast State Championship title game. The game was originally scheduled for Tuesday afternoon.

"The delay won't affect these kids at all," Indians manager Mike Rieg said. "They'll be ready to play whenever they are told to take the field."

The winner will advance to the Mid-Atlantic regionals in Mountainside, N.J. The tournament is scheduled to begin Wednesday, July 13.

The Indians registered five consecutive tourney victories to advance to the title game. According to Rieg, the players aren't adversely affected by a deficit.

"There's no quit in this team," the manager said. "Being down by a couple runs does not phase them. They don't take plays off. It's something we've been preaching since they were eight years old."

The team began the tournament with an 8-3 win over Unionville on Saturday, July 2. Ryan Cairns finished with two hits and three RBIs for the Indians, who scored four runs in the first inning and three in the third inning. Pete Moser scored two runs.

Trent Kellogg earned the mound win, allowing just one unearned run in 2 1/2 innings of relief. Adam Gavinski earned the save despite allowing an unearned run in the sixth inning.

Later that day, the team posted a 5-1 victory over Pennsbury. Jack Rieg went the distance on the mound, allowing just one run and one hit while striking out six.

Rieg led the team at the plate, delivering two hits and two RBIs. Cairns added two RBIs.

On Sunday, the Indians posted a 5-2 victory over Roxboro. Rieg delivered two hits and drove in a run for the team, which scored twice in the second inning to overcome a 2-1 deficit.

Ryan McMaster earned the mound victory with two shutout innings of relief. Stephen Mumford, Cairns and Cole Engle each tossed one shutout inning.

Rieg went 2-for-4 at the plate for the Indians, who scored in four of their six offensive innings.

The following day, the team won two additional games to advance to Tuesday's title game. Initially, the Indians rallied for a 10-9 walk-off win over Hatfield-Towamencin with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning on July 4.

Lincoln Fijalkowski and Engle each finished with three RBIs. Mumford, Moser and Fijalkowski each posted two hits.

Adam Gavinski pitched the sixth inning to earn the mound victory. He did not allow an earned run. Hatfield-Towamencin scored twice in the top of the sixth inning to force a 9-9 tie.

Rieg's two-run homer in the seventh inning of the semifinal round game against BYC lifted Upper Perkiomen to a 5-4 victory. The homer snapped a 3-3 tie.

Rieg finished with three RBIs. Cairns drove in two runs.

Rieg also earned the mound victory with 1 2/3 innings of relief. He allowed one earned run. Gavinski struck out the final hitter to post the save.
