When Naples, Italy native Alex Chiaro made his move to the United States, he had a visit from peter, one of his seven brothers, a professionally trained chef working at the savoy hotel in London, England, Peter knew good food.
When it came time for Peter to return home, Alex refused to let him leave convincing him the two should open their own restaurant. The brothers opened their first Chiaro's Pizzeria Restaurant in Pennsburg, Pennsylvania in 1976 after enjoying success in New York City. They were later joined by Vince, and the family began planting roots at their family farm in Red Hill.
In time, Chiaro's added three more BYOB restaurants in Green Lane, Sellersville, and Skippack, with drive up windows at its Sellersville and Green Lane locations.
Known best for flavor and consistency, their pizza is always a hit. Peter Chiaro is especially proud of his homemade soups and that fact "Almost everybody in town calls him 'Uncle Peter'," nephew Alex said.
Chiaro's still uses Alex Sr. and Peter's original recipes including only the highest quality mozzarella cheese which is low in butter fat. They make the dough fresh each day, throwing it by hand to keep it soft and properly develop the gluten. Their sauce contains selected herbs and a blend of three Italian tomatoes that insure balance, freshness, and flavor.
They take pride in creating a family atmosphere. "Our family has always enjoyed being part of the community," Alex said.
These days the family has blossomed to include 27 grandchildren and great grandchildren. As the business and family grew, many employees grew their own families' and a new generation continues to work together building a strong community. That is why the Chiaro's family considers their customers and coworkers part of their family."
