A Red Hill man is accused of causing an accident with two motorcycle riders in Upper Hanover. William Gross, 57, of Main Street, faces six felony counts – including four for aggravated assault by vehicle – one misdemeanor DUI charge and two related summary offenses following the April 23 incident.
Gross is also accused of fleeing the scene in a pickup truck following the incident, which occurred at 8:24 p.m. at the intersection of Route 663 and Geryville Pike.
The state police said that two Quakertown men, aged 21 and 23, sustained serious bodily injury and were hospitalized after they ran into Gross' vehicle as it turned left in front of them.
A first responder dispatched to the incident led police to Gross after he observed the damaged vehicle leaving the scene. He followed Gross' truck until it was parked in a lot for an apartment building on Main Street in Red Hill.
The witness told authorities he observed a man wearing a white baseball cap exit the vehicle and walk to a dumpster six spots from the truck. The observer heard bottles clinking, watched the man enter the rear of the apartment building, and then dialed 911, according to the police criminal complaint filed in the Red Hill court of District Judge Maureen Coggins.
Troopers responding directly to the complex found a tan GMC Canyon which had sustained damage to the passenger side, had a large impact mark on the front corner and the windshield, and multiple marks and blood on the doors consistent with a crash.
Both windows on the passenger side were shattered. A strong odor of alcohol emanated through the broken windows, according to the affidavit of probable cause.
A second witness pointed the troopers to Gross' apartment.
Gross had called 911 from his residence to report that he was involved in a crash at the intersection of Route 663 and Geryville Pike.
After making contact with the troopers on the scene of his apartment building at 8:55 p.m., Gross also informed them that he was involved in an accident at the intersection. He said that while he was attempting to turn left onto Geryville Pike, there was a loud impact on his right side.
Gross advised the troopers that he did not stop. He continued to his residence where he drank a beer and a shot of alcohol before dialing the police, according to the legal document.
In the dumpster in the parking lot, troopers claim to have discovered a case of Miller Lite glass bottles and 10 empty bottles inside a cardboard Miller Lite 12-pack box.
Gross was arrested at the scene.
A crash investigation revealed that the truck was traveling south on Route 663 approaching Geryville Pike and that the driver failed to yield to the motorcycles heading in the opposite direction. A right-rear mud flap with a faded GMC logo was discovered at the scene. A search of the truck turned up a motorcycle mirror on the passenger floorboard, police stated.
One of the motorcycle riders sustained a broken right wrist, femur and fibula as well as a head injury. The other broke his left ankle, left wrist and right hand, according to law enforcement officials.
Gross was initially remanded to Montgomery County jail following an April 23 preliminary arraignment where District Judge Harry J. Nesbitt set bail in the case at 10 percent of $10,000 monetary. Gross posted bail two days later, according to information on a state judicial website. The incident remains under investigation. A preliminary hearing in the case is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on May 2 before Coggins.
