British Prime Minister Boris Johnson recently made a surprise visit to Kyiv. He actually toured the city with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. It was a great show of support in a time when Ukraine is under increasing and brutal attacks by Russia.
Leaders from Austria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, and Slovenia have also visited the capital of Ukraine, to show support for the country that has been brutalized by a war they didn't start.
Many other major NATO and European Union countries have shown their support by sending high-level officials or delegations to meet with President Zelensky.
It is time for the United States to do the same.
It is also time for the United Nations to do so as well.
Yes, there is danger but with the levels of security provided to officials, an unannounced meeting could be done. No press releases announcing the journey, no fanfare or parades, and no "look what I'm going to do" leaks to favored media pipelines. Just a clandestine meeting to show support for Ukraine and defiance to a Russian aggressor. Just silently in and out. Boris Johnson and British intelligence did it – so can we. You can take all the bows you want when you return home.
Yes, in this war there is risk. You don't know where or when the next missile will strike. Hospitals, schools, apartment buildings, stores, and homes; nothing is off limits to the aggressors.
It would be a fearless show of support at a time when people are dying each day for their country – civilians and combatants. It could even add to their belief that the United States and its leaders do care about and support them.
Not everything is or should be about politics or fear. The people of Ukraine and the world will judge the United States on the actions of their leaders.
Talks are in progress in Washington, D.C. to decide if to send somebody and who should go.
Let's hope the decision is made soon and whoever goes has a safe journey and can keep the flame of hope burning for the people of Ukraine.
