Douglass Twp. Reaches Agreement with Suspended Police Officer
Written by Jennifer Frieze, Correspondent
2021-11-03

On Monday evening, the Douglass Township board of supervisors unanimously approved a motion to accept the agreement between the township and a municipal police officer under suspension.

A hearing to discuss the disciplinary action against the officer was advertised, however, the officer requested that the meeting remain private. Details of the agreement were not discussed on Monday evening.

Police Chief Barry Templin informed the board and concerned residents that all shifts are covered until the suspension is lifted. In addition, no further action is required from either party.

The board also approved the Intergovernmental Cooperation Agreement between New Hanover Township and Douglass Township. The agreement is in regard to future public works projects. This agreement has been in the making for over a year and will go into effect in 2022.

Julia Leshinskie presented the board and residents with her Girl Scout award project. Leshinskie received the Silver Award for constructing bat houses for designated open space areas in the township. She chose this project because she wanted people to learn about the importance of bats in the ecosystem.

The bat houses are painted red to help maintain the proper temperature within the structure and are positioned facing south. It can take up to three years for bats to start utilizing their new homes. In addition, Leshinskie taught her troop how to construct the houses.

Leshinskie was thanked by all members of the board for her contribution to the environment and the township and for the great job she did on her presentation.  "Thank you for presenting to us and building the bat houses for the township," said Vice Chairman Tom Wynne.

Township Manager Peter Hiryak updated the board on the status of the proposed ordinance that would prohibit parking on public streets during snow and ice storms. The ordinance had been reviewed by the solicitor's office and township staff. The subject will be on the agenda for the board of supervisors meeting on December 6.

An executive session was held before the start of the public meeting on Monday evening to discuss personnel and litigation matters. No decisions were made.
