Two Incumbent UPSD Board Members Not on Primary Ballot
Written by Bradley Schlegel, Staff Writer
2021-03-31

Two of the four incumbent members on the Upper Perkiomen School Board will not be on the ballot for the May 18 Primary Election. Stephen Cunningham and Kerry Drake are not included in the unofficial candidate list, posted on the Montgomery County website.

Cunningham confirmed that he won't be seeking a second term in an email message received Tuesday morning. Drake did not respond to multiple messages seeking comment.

President Melanie Cunningham and Keith McCarrick will be joined by five challengers who are seeking four seats on the board. The newcomers include Emily Psaris McCormick, JP Prego, Tatiana Galota, Eve Puhalla and Krista Leh.

McCormick, Prego, Galota and Puhalla will each appear on the Republican and Democratic ballots. Krista Leh filed as a Democrat, according to the information.

Stephen Cunningham was elected to the board for the first time in 2017. Drake, who was re-elected during the same election, served two stints as board president during the last term.

In Red Hill, three incumbent council members have filed to appear on the primary ballot. Four seats are available.

Faith Diascro, who has been on council since 2000, decided not to run for another term. She replaced her husband Tom, who served on council from 1988 to 2000.

Republican Liz DeJesus and Kimberly Gery, as well as Democrat Philip Johnson, seek reelection. Incumbent Republican Dave Schiffgens is the lone candidate for mayor. Lori Horning, a Democrat, and Paul Decker, a Republican, have no current competition for the tax collector and constable positions, respectively.

In East Greenville, three of the borough's four incumbent council members appear to be running unchallenged. The fourth has no apparent competition for mayor.

President Angie Fegely and Joe Rock will appear on the Republican side of the ballot along with John Dingler, a challenger. Ryan Pugh is the lone Democrat.

Lon Brinckman II, a current member of council, is the only mayoral candidate on the ballot. Brinckman hopes to succeed Stephen Wescott, who was appointed earlier this year following the resignation of Keith Gerhart. Diane Criddle is the lone candidate listed for borough tax collector.

In Pennsburg, four incumbent council members and Mayor Charles Shagg are running unopposed. Council President Diane Stevens, along with Wayne Stevens, Michael R. Mensch and Keith Goodwin will appear on the Republican ballot.

In Marlborough, Supervisor William Jacobs is running unopposed. The Democratic nomination for tax collector will feature a competition between Mary Jacobs and Betty J. White. Sylvester L. White, Sr., a Democrat, will face Republican Zachary Diehl in the race for constable in the fall. Donald Pelham, a Republican, is the lone candidate running for township auditor.

In Green Lane, two incumbent council members – Republicans Brian L. Carpenter and Darren Landis – along with Mayor Lynn Wolfe, are currently running unopposed.

In Upper Hanover, with two seats available on the board of supervisors, Vice Chairman Ben Fiorito is prepared to defend his seat. However, Chairman Eugene Fried is not on the list posted by county officials. Stefan Laessig, a Republican, is the only other candidate listed.

In New Hanover, supervisors Vice Chairman Chuck Garner is not running for another six-year term. Gregory L. Maskrey and Keith Youse, a former police officer in the township, are competing for the Republican nomination for the seat. No Democrats are listed. Molly Bauer is the only listed candidate for tax collector.

In Douglass Township, Republican Sara Carpenter is the only listed candidate seeking to fill Dr. Alan Kesier's current seat on the board of supervisors. Kesier is not included on the list presented by election officials.

Rebecca E. Zern, the incumbent tax collector, is being challenged in a Republican Primary by Kimberlee M. Stouch, whose husband currently chairs the township's board of supervisors. Joshua Stouch is also on the ballot as a Constable candidate.

In Upper Frederick, incumbent Supervisor William J. Tray is being challenged in the Republican primary by William E. Landman. Republican Michelle R. Hanson (tax collector), Democratic Judy Bieberfeld (auditor) and Republican William Karaffa (constable) are all currently running unopposed.

In Lower Frederick, no candidates will be challenged during the Primary. Democrat Gail Comden and Republican David M. Scheuren are both running unopposed to fill a seat on the township's board of supervisors.  Auditor candidates Alicia Wright, a Democrat, and Bryan J. Hill, a Republican face a similar scenario. A pair of Republicans, Josh Embree and Ernest Schmitt, are running unopposed for tax collector and constable, respectively.

In Upper Salford, Republicans Richard Sacks (supervisor), Lori F. Smith (tax collector), Virginia L. McElroy (auditor) and David Springer (constable) are running unopposed.

In Lower Salford, Democratic Gail Comden and Republican David M. Scheuren have no identified competition in their respective primary races for a seat on the township's board of supervisors. Both hope to fill the seat currently occupied by Vice Chairman Doug Johnson. Republicans Douglas K. Souder (tax collector), Andrea Dauphinee (auditor) and Richard B. Pennycuick (constable) face no apparent opposition in their respective races.

In the Boyertown Area School District, Jon Emeigh and Jeffrey Zawada are vying to fill a seat currently occupied by Brandon J. Foose. Both candidates have registered in both parties. Foose does not appear on the county's list. The seat in Region III represents residents living north of Middle Creek in Douglass Township as well as New Hanover and Upper Frederick townships.
