A knife-wielding Pennsburg man who led law enforcement on a foot chase through two boroughs Sunday faces four counts of felony aggravated assault. A state trooper arrested Mark Andrew Miller, 34, of Washington Street, in Pennsburg, following the alleged assault in East Greenville.
Miller is accused of slashing a man in the knuckles with a knife in the area of Front Street and Long Alley. He is also accused of misdemeanor possession of a weapon, six counts of simple assault and one count each of reckless endangerment and resisting arrest.
The incident originated in a detached garage in the unit block of Cherry Street on Aug. 30. A resident told authorities that he and a friend were in the garage when a white male subject, about six feet tall wearing a blue tank top, entered the garage. The man said nothing but started throwing punches at the resident and his friend.
According to a witness, the altercation moved outside and the witness observed the subject holding a knife. He picked up an object to defend himself.
At 6 p.m. troopers were dispatched to the 100 block of Cherry Street. EMS also arrived to treat a male subject cut by a knife, according to the affidavit of probable cause.
At the scene, Trooper Matthew Taylor spotted Miller along the railroad tracks and behind a tree line in the area of Front Street and Long Alley. The trooper instructed the subject not to move, but Miller continued to walk away from the officer, ignoring the commands.
Miller came to Second Street and turned right. Taylor observed a knife in the subject's hand, drew his weapon and instructed the subject to drop the knife, according to the legal document.
Miller ran off the roadway behind a house on Seminary Street in Pennsburg and then east on Seminary Street to Third Street. The trooper no longer saw the knife. The subject continued running on Third Street to Silk Alley to Washington Street between the houses back to Silk Alley.
Eventually, after following the trooper's direction to sit, the subject stood up and approached the trooper in a quick and aggressive manner with his fists out and clenched. Taylor fired his taser at Miller's stomach. Miller was then taken into custody, according to court records.
District Judge Maureen Coggins set bail in the case at $99,000 monetary. Miller was remanded to Montgomery County jail. A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for 10 a.m. on Sept. 14, according to information posted on a state judicial website.
In June, the state police arrested Miller for allegedly breaking into Schultz Hall at Perkiomen School and discharging a fire extinguisher inside the building. He was charged with felony burglary and criminal trespassing charges, misdemeanor illegal drug possession and theft, as well as summary criminal mischief.
