Hereford Seeks Larger Venue for Next Zoning Hearing
Written by Candace Perry, Correspondent
2020-09-02

Due to the number of interested parties for the next zoning hearing about the Habitats of Hope house in Huff's Church, Hereford Township, the meeting will require a bigger space.

Solicitor Eugene Orlando discussed the proceedings of the Monday, August 31 hearing at the Hereford Board of Supervisors' meeting on Tuesday, September 1 via Zoom and in person.

Because the township asked for an extension for the company's conditional use application, another hearing will need to be scheduled, possibly on October 19. He said that the Seisholtzville Fire Company was not large enough and that another space would need to accommodate at least 50 people with social distancing.

The Lebanon-based company, Habitats for Hope, LLC, is seeking a zoning variance and has also challenged that township's ordinance as "exclusionary to transitional housing." Their proposed house, located in the former Landhaven Inn, would help transition women struggling with drug addiction.

Board chairman John Membrino stated that the hearing could not be held via Zoom as it is "not a proper meeting" and it was impossible to see and hear the hearing on Monday night using Zoom.

The supervisors met in executive session prior to their meeting to discuss the hearing and the company's challenge to the ordinance.

In other news, Michael McManamey, a representative for the developer leasing the property for the proposed Wawa, attended the meeting to discuss the leasing agreements and inform the supervisors how the work would proceed.

He said that his company constructs a pad-ready site with stormwater and septic systems in place. Wawa then comes in to finish the store and gas pumps and has six months to do so. The supervisors asked a letter of credit from McManamey as financial security.

In other development news, the supervisors approved waivers and final approval of a plan by Apollo Zeus Holdings for the construction of a new 5,000 square foot building on Tollgate Road to be used for the repair of dumpsters.

The supervisors also discussed the vacating of Kahler Road, a road in the township with one residence on it. When put to a vote the motion died for lack of a second.
