An explosion on a property in Lower Milford Township on Tuesday killed at least one person. A Conex shipping container filled with fireworks detonated, according to information provided by the state police in Bethlehem.
Brian Ehret, 50, was pronounced dead at 4:47 p.m. in the back yard of his property property at 8439 Orchard Road, according to information provided Wednesday afternoon by Daniel A. Buglio, the first deputy coroner of the Lehigh County Forensics Center. An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday to determine the cause and manner of death.
Volunteers of the Lower Milford Fire Company were dispatched to the residence shortly after 3 p.m. Tuesday along with an emergency medical unit from the Upper Perkiomen Valley Ambulance Association to the residence in Lehigh County.
The blast injured at least one other person, who was carried from the sight by two others, according to a video recorded by a bystander.
Troopers from the Fogelsville barracks were dispatched at 3:06 p.m. Tuesday to the scene for the report of an explosion. One person died according to a news release issued Tuesday night by Buglio. Crews remained on the scene into Wednesday evening.
Law enforcement officials do not know how the explosion occurred. The incident remains under investigation by the state police, the coroner's office and U.S. Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
Shortly after they were dispatched, emergency communications officials received additional calls of explosions at the scene and upgraded the call with a second alarm bringing in additional fire and emergency units from neighboring companies. At that time, black smoke rose high into the clear sky and could be seen from more than 10 miles away.
Numerous fire departments and EMS personnel from the area responded to this incident. The Lehigh County Coroner, Lehigh County Special Operations, Troop M Fire Marshal,
Troop M Forensic Services Unit, Troop M Criminal Investigative Unit and the Pennsylvania
State Police Hazardous Device and Explosives (HDES) are all assisting with this investigation.
The area of Spinnerstown Road and Orchard Road, along with School House Lane and Orchard Road, remained closed Wednesday morning as authorities continued their investigation.
