At Tuesday's meeting of the Upper Salford Board of Supervisors, discussions continued on the ongoing cleanup of well water on Baghurst Drive. Chairman Ted Poatsy stated that there have been monthly meetings and onsite surveys to continue the process of ensuring residents have access to clean and safe drinking water.
Approximately 50 wells have been contaminated since the Montgomery County Health Department made its first investigation 2000. The area was listed by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Superfund National Priority.
Vice Chairman Kevin O'Donnell announced that the township is regularly receiving updates about the coronavirus in Montgomery County and that no closures of agencies or schools have been announced in the township. O'Donnell suggested that concerned citizens can find valuable information at coronavirus.gov.
The Board of Supervisors announced that the Perkiomen Library discovered serious issues with the foundation of their building making the library unsafe. Once discovered, the issue must be fixed. The Upper Salford Board of Supervisors suggested the library talk to the Delaware Valley Trust for a loan in the amount of $200,000.
The township must sponsor the library as an intermediary. The township will take out the loan and the library will pay the township over a 10 year period. The loan is at a very low interest rate at approximately 1%.
Kevin O'Donnell motioned to adopt the ordinance, general obligation note, 2020 series, for the Perkiomen Valley Capital Project. The board approved the motion and will move forward to process the necessary paperwork.
The board authorized the submission of a grant application for approximately $200,000 for the acquisition of land to be annexed into open space for the township. It's a privately owned 25 acre parcel of land that is adjacent to the right side of the historic Heister House. The land is attached to the open space preserve that the township already owns. "This is a unique opportunity. The patriarch of the family asked that the land be preserved." said Poatsy.
Chairman Kevin O'Donnell motioned to approve the authorization of the MontCo 2040 grant submission. The board approved and will proceed with the applying for the grant.
In other news, Secretary Amy Shafer announced the State Police report for the month of February. There were 106 calls of service, 38 security checks and 18 security patrols in the township. This brings the total number of calls to 191 year to date.
The Upper Salford Historical Society announced that their next meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on March 23 at the Taber Church. The society asked for non-perishable food item donations for the church's food pantry. The society also stated that an 1893 map of Towamencin was discovered and was donated to the society. The map is being professionally framed and will be on display at the historical society.
