AiYi Young's overtime goal Tuesday night lifted Upper Perkiomen's field hockey team into this weekend's District One Class 2A Championship game. The senior scored on a penalty corner midway through the first overtime period to lift her team to a 3-2 victory over Bishop Shanahan in a semifinal round contest.
Young added two assists for the visiting Indians (19-4), who extended their winning streak to nine games. Ashlyn Gatto and Bella Carpenter also scored.
Goalkeeper Lynnsi Joyce registered nine saves for the No. 3 seeded Tribe, which will take on Merion Mercy Academy in the title game at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at Methacton High School.
Gatto's goal early in the game staked Upper Perkiomen to a 1-0 lead. A goal by Angelina Luongo with three minutes remaining in the first half pulled the No. 2 seeded Eagles even at halftime.
Carpenter's tally penalty corner midway through the second half on a corner regained a lead for the Indians. However, Luongo responded in short order with another goal to force a 2-2 tie.
On Thursday, Oct 24, the Indians advanced to the district semifinals and qualify for the state tournament with a 3-0 victory over Wissahickon. Colleen Creneti, Gatto and Sydney Crossin scored. Kylene Gooch registered two assists.
Joyce recorded two saves to post her first career post-season shutout for the host Tribe, who led 2-0 at halftime. Bella Carpenter added a defensive save.
The Indians have already earned a berth in the PIAA Class 2A Tournament, which begins Tuesday. They will face either the No.6 seed from District Three or the District 12 champion in the opening round.
The Tribe will be aiming for its first district title since 2013, when Casey Umstead led it to a 1-0 victory over Merion Mercy at Wissahickon High School. The team's last state tournament victory, 3-2 over Donegal at Wissahickon, came on Nov. 5 of that season.
