Last Thursday, the Quakertown Community School District Board of Directors decided to continue allowing homeschooled students living in the district to attend the Upper Bucks County Technical High School.
After voting to allow a student to attend back in August, the board considered revising an existing vocational-education policy that states homeschooled students in the district can participate in career-technical education. With five members in attendance Thursday night, the board voted 4-1 to keep the policy as it is.
Board member Keith Micucci, who voted to change the policy, explained that the language conflicts with the district's current home education policy.
"I don't want to restrict anybody from our schools, but we have to understand what that would look like financially and operationally,' Micucci said.
Assistant Superintendent Nancianne Edwards noted that, prior to the student request before the board last month, school administration believed that homeschooled students could not attend the technical high school, based on the existing home education policy.
Board member Ron Jackson suggested the policy committee continue to look at the discrepancy but keep the policy as it is in the interim to ensure homeschooled students can continue to attend the technical high school.
"I don't want us to close the door to homeschooled students." Jackson said. "It could go back to the policy committee, but, for now, it keeps the door open."
Board members Jennifer Weed, Jonathon Kern and Robert Diliberto were absent from Thursday's meeting. President Steaven Klein and Superintendent William Harner were also not in attendance.
