opened the tournament on Friday, Sept. 20 at Perkiomen Valley High School by posting an 8-5 victory over Anna Vogel, Norristown's No. 1 player.
"Sykler did a good job moving her opponent around and minimizing mistakes," said John Williamson, Upper Perkiomen's head coach.
However, Gionfriddo was knocked out the tournament after losing 8-0 to Spring-Ford's Isabel Mejia in the second round. Mejia – her team's No. 2 player, who lost to teammate Cady Krause in the final round – executed a variety of finishing shots, according to Williamson.
"Skyler was just overwhelmed," the coach said. "(Mejia) is a very talented player."
According to Williamson, Gionfriddo's game has remained consistent during the second half of the season. He said the senior has made a lot of her matches competitive.
"Skyler has been playing real solid," the coach said. "That carried over into the weekend. She's very happy."
Maddy Gochnauer, Upper Perkiomen's No. 1 seed, lost her opening round match 8-2 to Pottsgrove's Grace Myers.
"Maddy let one get away," Williamson said.
On Tuesday, the Indians lost 5-2 to Phoenixville in a conference match. Gochnauer defeated Cate Rieg 7-6 (7-5), 6-3. Sianni Camarata and Makenna Phipps beat Isabelle Butera and Rosa Gerner 6-3, 6-4.
The Tribe dropped a conference match to Boyertown on Wednesday, Sept. 18. Their third and fourth doubles team posted victories in a 5-2 defeat.
At No. 3 doubles, Rachel Godshall and Sara Andrasek defeated Jade Slaughter and Brenna Henry 2-6, 6-1, 6-2. Camarata and Phipps beat Khloe Penna and Abby Cadwalla 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.
According to Williamson, two pairs from Upper Perkiomen will compete in the conference's doubles tournament, scheduled for Oct. 11-12 at Perkiomen Valley High School. He said the No. 1 team – consisting of Carly Jenkins and Shelby Livingstone – will likely participate. Additionally, Williamson indicated a desire to match up two of the team's three singles players.
"I'm not sure who that will be," Williamson said. "I have to figure that out."
