Green Lane Sewer Authority to Crack Down on Unpaid Bills
Written by Abigail Clifford, Correspondent
2019-06-19

At their regular council meeting on June 13, the Green Lane Sewer Authority expressed its frustration when it was announced that the solicitor, Dave Comer, plans to finally crack down on unpaid sewage bills in the township.

"We are going to be aggressively seeking payment," stated Vice President Gerald Godshall. "We have up to $97,000 in the books that residents owe; we can't seem to work with certain people."

According to Godshall, one residence in Sumneytown has close to $29,000 in unpaid sewage bills.

"This issue has just gotten out of hand; we can't shut their system off because it makes the house uninhabitable law," explained Godshall, "We don't want to start raising rates because of this, but it might be a possibility if things don't turn around soon."

In other news, the council also took time to discuss the facts from the May 29 storm that wreaked havoc in the region.

"Upper Salford had the most direct hit; but there was some damage in the area of 5th and Walnut Street, as well as, across the street at Upper Ridge Road with a tree down," stated Mayor Lynn Wolfe. "But that was pretty much the only damage that Green Lane had."

At the height of the storm, 2,500 people were left without power in the township for up to three days, but the Green Lane Fire Company opened for water and recharging station.

"The stories of neighbors helping neighbors in the cleanup were very heartwarming to see and hear," stated Wolfe.

For any future power outages, Wolfe said that the Upper Perkiomen YMCA confirmed that it will be opening its doors to anyone with a proof of address, regardless if they are a member or not,  for full facility usage.  Wolfe also took the time to remind residents to register with ReadyMontco.org for alerts and information specific to Green Lane.

In new business, the council authorized the start of the update on ordinance codification, which has not been conducted since 1995. The council also approved the beginning of researching and building a township website to get information out to residents in conjunction to the updates on code ordinances.

"We've talked about this for over ten years, I think it is about time we completed this; a lot of confusion has been caused from this over the years," stated Comer.

The codification of ordinance codes will cost $11,000 and will take approximately 18 months to complete.
