At age 19 and serving with the U. S. Naval Reserve, he was the nation's youngest commissioned pilot at the time.  He flew 58 combat missions during World War II and received the Distinguished Flying Cross for bravery.  His plane was shot down by the Japanese on September 2, 1944.  He was rescued by an American submarine.
