Thanksgiving Day is here and the full brunt of the holiday season is upon us.  Many shoppers are doing some really hard thinking about gift buying this year.  So much to see; so much to buy; so much to give.

            Online purchasing has made traditional Christmas shopping trips a thing of the past for many.  Too bad – time saved becomes memories never made.

            One gift that isn't expensive and should never go out of style is the care and compassion we show to others – especially those less fortunate than us.

            There was a time in the Upper Perkiomen Valley and nearby areas when a person knew everyone in the neighborhood.  Many folks didn't even feel it was necessary to lock their doors at night, and if they did, a neighbor had a key. 

            You knew who your neighbor was and a little about them.  Not enough to mind their business, but you knew if they lived alone, had family in the area, were elderly or sick.  If you lived alone and the newspapers, mail or milk piled up, your neighbor was the first one to notice and check on you.

            My, how we've grown.

            Today, people pass their neighbors without a wave or a "hello."  Instead of striking up a friendship, many people seem content to ignore each other's existence.           What happened?

            In our quest for better and higher education did we forget to teach and learn basic social skills?  As we rose to the top of the occupational ladder did we fail to notice others who weren't as fortunate as us? 

            Why do we have trouble seeing past the rough appearance of an individual to see the human being that exists under the worn flannel and faded denim?  Has displaying an elitist attitude become more fashionable and acceptable than a handshake or a pat on the back?

            As we hone our social media skills do we leave behind the ability to communicate face-to-face, learning from facial expressions or physical mannerisms?  Are we content to reduce the face of our friends to what we see on an iPhone or computer screen?

            Neighbors have become "those that live there"--nothing more.

            This holiday season make a pledge to know your neighbors.  Promise yourself that if you see something out of the ordinary; if the mail or newspapers are piling up, or you don't see your neighbor for an unusual period of time; that you will knock on their door to check on him or her. 

            If you're uncomfortable checking on them, call the police and explain your concerns.  They will check on your neighbor for you.

            You may save your neighbor's life or, at least, show a concern for them that will make them and you feel better.  And practice that genuine concern for your neighbors all year long.

            Pride in your community and concern for your neighbors are good gifts to share.
