Last Thursday, the Quakertown Community School District Board of Directors introduced Officer Brian Hendrzak of the Richland Township Police Department as the second school resource officer (SRO) for the district.
The decision to bring on an additional SRO came after a May incident in which a threat prompted Quakertown Community High School to be placed on lockdown for two hours.
For eight of his ten years as an officer in Richland, Hendrzak has additionally served on the Central Bucks Special Response Team. He also worked for the Pennsylvania State Police, Bureau of Liquor Control Enforcement for five years.
During his introduction Thursday night, Officer Hendrzak said he is completing a 40-hour SRO training developed by the National Association of School Resource Officers.
Hendrzak will be assigned to Strayer Middle School. Officer Bob Lee of the Quakertown Police Department focuses on the high school. In addition to the added security and emergency preparedness, both officers will provide educational insight on a variety of social issues that QCSD students face.
Superintendent William Harner said that the decision to hire a second SRO has been well received and he has gotten positive feedback on Hendrzak filling that role.
"He has a great reputation within his profession," Harner said.
In other business Thursday night, the board reviewed and accepted the QCSD performance metrics reports for the 2017-2018 school year. The report, as presented, indicated that the district met 9 out of 24 target metrics ranging from school readiness after kindergarten to career readiness and specific proficiencies.
The board, however, passed a motion to include metrics that came within .5% of goal, bringing the outcomes to 12 out of 24.
