A Reading man has been arrested for allegedly stealing packages from front porches in New Hanover. Deiby Morillo, 27, faces two felony counts of forgery and one misdemeanor count of tampering with records, possessing an instrument of crime and theft by unlawful taking in the township.
Morillo is accused of removing a package from a home on Jessica Drive on July 25 and on Donald Drive two days later in the New Hanover, according to the police criminal complaint filed in the court of District Judge Maurice Saylor. Local authorities took him into custody after serving a search warrant July 27 on a black Honda Odyssey in the parking lot of the Brookside Family Restaurant, located at 1338 N. Charlotte St. in Lower Pottsgrove.
Another subject identified by police was later released pending further investigation, according to a news release issued by Kevin R. McKeon, chief of the New Hanover Township Police Department. McKeon also thanked the Lower Pottsgrove Police Department, the Upper Pottsgrove Police Department, the Douglass Township Police Department, and "numerous other individuals who have provided us with information related to this investigation for their assistance."
On July 25, New Hanover officers were dispatched to a home in the 2000 block of Jessica Drive for the report of a stolen package. A caller told authorities that a black or Hispanic man, driving a black Honda Odyssey and wearing a black Puma hat with a red label on the left side of the brim, walked up the driveway and removed a package from the porch and returned to the van which drove away, according to the affidavit of probable cause.
The same vehicle was observed driving through the Windlestrae development the following day. Similar incidents were also discovering in neighboring municipalities. A resident of Lee Drive in Lower Pottsgrove opened a package – addressed to Endel Nunez – and discovered an iPhone inside. Shortly thereafter, two black or Hispanic males in a black van pulled up to the house and asked the package had been delivered. The resident gave the men the package, according to law enforcement officials.
On July 27, a resident of the 2000 block of Donald Drive told authorities she had ordered a canine hat from Amazon and received a notification that it had been hand delivered to the residence, but that she had not received it.
Later that day, Lower Pottsgrove police received a call from a subject who saw the van parked at the restaurant. Authorities discovered several USPS shipping envelopes on the front floorboard. They also discovered multiple brown shipping boxes inside a dumpster similar to one located in the van, according to court records.
A short time later, New Hanover police received a call from a Windy Hill resident indicating he received a package – which contained a brand new iPhone – addressed to someone else at his address, the records state. Authorities also determined Morillo and the other subject provided fraudulent driver's licenses.
Morillo was arraigned July 28 by District Judge Harry J. Nesbitt III, who set bail in the case at $25,000 monetary. A preliminary hearing in the case, before the same judge, has been scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on Aug. 10, according to the judicial website.
