Mr. Upper Perk Returns to the Limelight
Ten contestants joined center stage on March 23 as the annual Mr. Upper Perk show came to life once again.
Mr.Upper Perk is a talent show designed for any guy in 9th through 12th grade. The students in each grade level had the opportunity to vote for Mr. Upper Perk representatives on behalf of their grade during the first semester of the school year.
After the votes are counted and the contestants are chosen, the guys work alongside art teacher Amy Lychock, to collaborate on the creation of Mr. Upper Perk.
There were two freshmen and sophomore contestants and three junior and senior contestants. The contestants were, ascending from freshmen to seniors: Riley Decker, Owen Sabastro, Marty Markowski, Baxtar Sewal, Matt Cressman, Don State, Griffin Wilcox, Julian Brown, Atif Huq, and Max Gorman. This year's host was Lychock along with her senior co-host Evan Hanney. Other school clubs including National Honors Society, student council, and stage crew lent a helping hand in the production of the show as well.
To begin Mr. Upper Perk, the ten contestants came out on stage in their formal wear. Each student wore a different type of tuxedo and together they performed a dance to the song "Suit and Tie" by Justin Timberlake.
Between each of the show's transitions, Lychock and Hanney entertained the audience with their wit and comical dialogue with one another.
The talent portion of Mr. Upper Perk followed after the formal wear. The contestants were already numbered before the show and they performed in numerical order. The talents covered a wide variety such as public speaking, dancing, comedy, singing, and yo-yo tricks. Senior Allison Herbst's thought that "Don's teacher roasts were funny".
After the talent portion came to a close, the summer wear began. Once the curtains were pulled away the audience could see all of the guys on stage shirtless and dressed in jean shorts with flannels tied around their waist.
Once again the contestants performed a dance routine to the song "Boyz to Men" by Motownphilly.
After this part of the show came the most difficult portion of Mr. Upper Perk … the question and answer. As each contestant was called up on stage alone one by one in reverse chronological order, they had to draw two random questions from a hat and answer them on the spot. The judges of Mr. Upper Perk also agreed that this was the most difficult part of the show and they know because the panel is made up of previous Mr. Upper Perk contestants.
As the night came to a close, Amy Lychock took the time to recognize Shawn Wenhold, the first Mr. Upper Perk winner in 2009. She recognized him because he had previously passed away this year from an overdose and this is the first year a new crown was bought for the winner.
She reminded everyone in the audience that "you don't need those types of things to have a good time. We all had a good time tonight without those".
Lychock then transitioned to the next part by announcing the runner up, sophomore Baxter Sewal, the yo-yo man. Last year's winner Conor Raftery then joined the hosts of the show on stage and crowned the new Mr. Upper Perk winner, Max Gorman who sang "Poor Unfortunate Souls" from The Little Mermaid.
