New Hanover Supervisors Approve New Full Time Police Position
Written by Candace Perry, Correspondent
2018-01-24

Though the decision met with some dissension among the New Hanover supervisors, the Township will have a new full time police officer.

The Board of Supervisors approved the changing of part-time officer Matt Dean's status to full time at their regular meeting on Monday, January 22, with a vote of four to one.

Police Chief Kevin McKeon stated, "Our town is growing. Our arrests are growing," and noted that the population had grown to 15,000 during his tenure as chief. "Our detectives are working all the time," he said, and added that he needs twelve full time officers right now.

Supervisors' Chair Chuck Garner disagreed. He noted that he did not see the cost benefit of adding another position with full-time benefits, but would definitely support part-time officers.

Supervisor Marie Livelsberger said that she believed that heads of departments, such as Chief McKeon, should be able to judge calls on their staffing.

Supervisor Phil Agliano agreed. "How do we put a price on safety?" he asked, and said that they should look to the chief, because he's the professional.

The supervisors voted to add the full time position, with Garner casting the dissenting vote.

In other staff news, the supervisors approved the promotion of Zoning Clerk Lynda Jackmore from part-time to full-time retroactive to January 1.

In other police news, the supervisors authorized the purchase of a new fully equipped Ford Explorer for $44,000. The new vehicle is a budgeted expense.

In public works news, director Dennis Flynn noted that there was one week remaining for Christmas tree drop off, and also asked residents to report any potholes they might see to his office.

An executive session was held prior the supervisors' work session on personnel matters, potential litigation with a developer, and ongoing litigation regarding the Courtside development.

In keeping with the new schedule for Supervisors' meetings, the next regular meeting with be held on Thursday, February 1. A public work session will be held on February 26.
