One Defendant Remains from Pot Bust
Written by Bradley Schlegel, Staff Writer
2017-08-02

In June, Larry Kline, 45, of McKinleyville, Calif., became the 19th defendant to admit to crimes related to his role major marijuana ring. On June 19, Kline pleaded guilty to four felonies before Montgomery County Common Pleas Court Judge Gary Silow, according to information posted on a state judicial website.

Only one defendant remains in the case, in which law enforcement officials claim the organization transported across country and sold at least four varieties of marijuana called "Mr. Nice Guy," "Flo," "Scatter Brain" and "Grape Ape." Ruben Morales, 50, of Harrisburg, is scheduled to face a bench trial on Nov. 14 before the same judge, according to information posted on the same website.

Morales faces 11 felony counts of corrupt practices, possession with intent to deliver, a related conspiracy charge, two counts of dealing in unlawful activities and three counts of criminal use of a communications facility, as well as seven related misdemeanor charges.

Rather than face a jury trial, Kline – who was facing 10 related felony and three misdemeanor charges – pleaded guilty to corrupt organizations, along with illegal possession with the intent to manufacture or deliver as well as a related conspiracy charge and criminal use of communications facility.

The corrupt practices conviction includes a sentence of between 11 months and 15 days and five years in jail along with five-year probationary period, according to information posted on the same website. It also states that Kline may participate in a house arrest in Humboldt County, CA, and that he is eligible for work release.

Both charges related to the illegal possession with the intent to manufacture or deliver pleads carry a five-year probation period. Kline's plea to criminal use of communications facility carries seven years of probation, according to the state judicial website.

A Jury trial in the case against Morales had been scheduled for June 19 in Norristown, according to court paperwork. On that date, Silow continued that trial and eight days later order a bench trial in November.

In September of 2014, local law enforcement officials disrupted the ring, which transported pot from California and commanded up to $5,000 per pound in locations that include Upper Hanover, East Greenville, Barto, Pennsburg (Montgomery), Boyertown, Blandon (Berks), North Philadelphia (Philadelphia), Orefield (Lehigh), Bethlehem (Northampton), Weatherly (Carbon) and Perkasie (Bucks), according to authorities.

Authorities withdrew charges against two of the 22 arrested suspects. Claudia Quintero, 45, of Highland N.Y., had two felony counts and two misdemeanor counts thrown out during an Oct. 7, 2015 preliminary hearing before District Judge Catherine Hummel Fried, according to court records.
