Post 184 Looking for Offense as Postseason Looms
Written by Bradley Schlegel, Staff Writer

With seven league games and three off days remaining before the Bux-Mont League playoffs, Perkiomen's American Legion baseball team needs to score more runs, according to Manager Mike Fitzgerald.  "Our offense is definitely a concert,"

he said.

In a 2-0 non-league loss to Muhlenberg on Saturday at Owen J. Roberts High School, the Indians managed just four hits. They posted leadoff runners in the first and second innings, but couldn't convert.  "We need to do a better job coming up with timely hits," Fitzgerald said.

During three games over the weekend in the Berks Invitational Tournament, the manager juggled Post 184's lineup. Justin Wornhan, the team's usual No. 9 hitter, batted leadoff. Bryan Pijanowski, the regular leadoff hitter, hit fourth in a pair of games Saturday against the A's and Spring City.

According to Fitzgerald, Wornhan might be able to lengthen his team's lineup at the top of the order.  "We need to figure a few things out," said the manager, whose team went 1-2 during the tournament.

According to the manager, the Indians (11-9 overall) incorporated more hit-and-run scenarios during the trio of games. He also encouraged the players to bunt for hits when the third baseman is back.

Wornhan, who emerged following the suspension of several players from the Upper Perkiomen High School baseball team two months ago, has developed into a key utility player for Post 184.  "Justin plays where ever we need him," Fitzgerald said.

Between games Saturday, Wornham said he feels most comfortable hitting ninth, with Pijanowski at the top of order, so he can serve as a second leadoff hitter.

On Friday night, Perkiomen lost 7-2 to the host NorChester Bulldogs. Brett Fullerton, Nolan Graber and Robert Guzman each finished with two hits.

Curtis Gerzevske, the Indians starting pitcher, surrendered three runs in the second inning. They pulled within 3-2 on the second inning on an infield throwing error.  However, the Bulldogs responded with three runs in the fifth inning to take control.

The next afternoon, against Muhlenberg, Wornham opened the game with a single to left for Post 184, took second on a wild pitch and was sacrificed to third. But he didn't score. In the second inning, Ben Tryon led off with an infield hit, but was also stranded at third.

The A's snapped a scoreless tie with a run in the bottom of the fourth on a ground ball. They scored again in the sixth inning on a slow roller to shortstop.

Later Saturday, Perkiomen rallied from an early five-run deficit to post an 11-10 victory over Spring City. Fullerton's walk off RBI single in bottom of the seventh inning capped a three-run rally. Wornhan earned the mound win in relief by tossing the final three innings. He also reached base safely in four of five plate appearances and stole five bases.

Tyler Ritsick led the team with three hits and two RBI. Nolan Graber delivered two hits and scored three runs. Logan Curley drove in two runs.

The Indians won their most recent Bux-Mont League games. On Tuesday night, they utilized an early offensive flurry to defeat Nor-Gwyn in five innings at Bonekemper Field. Graber paced a 14-hit barrage with two hits, two runs and three RBI.

Glenn Boyer finished with two hits, two runs and two RBI for Perkiomen, which scored all of its runs in the initial three innings. On the mound, Boyer allowed just one hit to earn the victory. He issued two walks and struck out two.

Graber pitched Post 184 to a 2-1 victory over host Plumstead on Thursday, June 22. The right hander allowed just four hits and one unearned run, while striking out seven for a complete-game win. Boyer worked a walk in the top of the fifth inning to snap a 1-1 tie. Boyer drove in both runs, while Fullerton finished with three hits.
