Jared Kuhns got hit with a headlock, but stayed on his feet. A few seconds later, he secured third place at 113 pounds in the Pioneer Athletic Conference Championships on Saturday.
"We were all shocked," interim head coach Jake Engle said. "Jared took his game up another notch."
Kuhns and Jarek Svanson (132 pounds) each won their consolation final match for Upper Perkiomen during the post-season tournament at Boyertown Area Senior High School.
Michael Modugno captured the 220-pound title. Jacob Folk (152) earned a silver medal. Zach Rozanski (15-14) finished sixth at 120 pounds for the Indians, who finished seventh out of 12 teams. All five qualified for the next weekend's District I Class AAA West Tournament at Spring-Ford. "Things went pretty much as expected," Engle said.
Kuhns, who opened his tournament with a first-period pin against Pope John Paul II's Ryan O'Donnell, suffered a 3-1 semifinal loss to Spring Ford's Brandon Meredith.
In the third-place bout, the junior battled Norristown's Grant Rubin to a scoreless first period. Early in the second period, Rubin hit a headlock. But Kuhns kept his balance by relying on unusual flexibility.
Kuhns (26-5) shot an arm between Rubin's legs in order to keep his opponent off balance, a move he learned from Svanson, his practice partner. Then Kuhns utilized a hip toss to put Rubin off his back. The fall came 55 seconds into the second. "I kept my composure," Kuhns said. "I knew I had to react."
Svanson (23-9) dominated Pottstown's Nathanael Parson in the third-place final. He utilized a six-point flurry in the second period to post a 14-2 victory.
In the semifinals, Svanson got caught in a cradle against Antonio Petrucelli, a freshman from Owen J. Roberts, and was pinned with 16 seconds left in the third period.
At the end of the second period, Svanson scored near-fall points after reversing a cradle. He looks forward to a rematch with Petrucelli this weekend.
"I know I can beat (Petrucelli)," Svanson said. "I nearly pinned him, and I wasn't even trying."
Modugno (27-3) capped an impressive performance by defeating Norristown's Marlon Cephas, Norristown by a technical fall in the third period.
"I'm very happy with how I did," said Modugno, who scored first-period falls over Pottsgrove's Avery Shivak and Spring-Ford's Tyler LaRocca to advance to the finals. "I hit my best shots of the season."
Engle described Modugno's performance as aggressive and imposing.
Folk advanced to the semifinals with a first-period pin of Michael Shreiner, from Pope John Paul II. Then, he defeated Boyertown's Hunter Vogels, 4-3.
In the 160-pound title bout, Ryan Resnick dominated Folk. The senior from Owen J. Roberts – the defending regional champion – posted an 11-4 victory.
"I felt like (Resnick) was a little stronger than me," Foulk said. "I'm happy to be moving on, but I would always like to do my best."
D.J. McIlvaine missed the tournament after suffering a concussion prior to Upper Perkiomen's match against Pottstown, according to Engle.
The coach also said Gavin Marks did not compete because he missed school Friday with an illness.
