A one-point half-time deficit spiraled out of control for Perkiomen School six minutes and 10 seconds into the third quarter against Pennington on Friday.
The visiting Red Raiders reeled off four consecutive touchdowns to extend their 7-6 halftime lead, cementing Perkiomen's 41-12 loss.
"We unraveled in the third quarter," said Perkiomen School head coach Tom Calvario, whose team suffered its second straight defeat.
Nyshear Woodson's 19-yard TD run on the final play of the third staked the Red Raiders to a 41-6 advantage and invoked the running clock.
"We just fell apart," said Jordan Minder, a Perkiomen School senior lineman.
During their final regular season home game, the Panthers (5-3) defense could not stop Woodson, who rushed for 249 yards and four touchdowns on 21 carries, and running back Dante Wilson.
In the third quarter, Woodson delivered a 23-yard touchdown run to put his team ahead 14-6. Wilson's 32-yard interception return then staked the team to a 20-6 advantage. Wilson scored again, this time from 37 yards out, with 6:56 remaining in the third quarter.
A fumble by Josh Cruz on Perkiomen School's ensuing possession set up a 32-yard TD run by Wilson. Woodson's 19-yard touchdown run with 11 seconds remaining in the quarter capped the outburst.
Levi Yeager, the Panthers' junior lineman, was ejected early in the third quarter for kicking a Pennington School player after the whistle.
The Red Raiders relied on three basic running plays in the second half, according to Calvario. He said the opposing offense repeatedly called for a dive, and a toss.
"We didn't do a good job tackling," the coach said. "Nobody came up to finish the play once the first hit was made."
According to Minter, an inside linebacker, Perkiomen School's defensive line was getting pushed off the ball, which led to several long runs.
Things seemed brighter in the first half, when Perkiomen's defense forced three fumbles, one of which led to a touchdown. Cruz knocked the ball out of the hands of Woodson during the second quarter; Guadarrama caught the ball out of the air, racing 73 yards to get the Panthers within 7-6.
"We were in the game in the first half," Calvario said. "But we couldn't pull through. I am proud that my guys did not quit."
The Panthers (5-3) defense just could not stop Woodson, who rushed for 249 yards and four touchdowns on 21 carries. Perkiomen's offense managed just one score, a 38-yard touchdown pass from Nick Guadarrama to Chander Brooks in the fourth quarter, long after the final outcome had been decided.
"Pennington has a very good team," Calvario said. "We're not very good right now."
Calvario described the game a missed opportunity for Perkiomen's senior class, which included Minter, PK Author, Steve Ratigan, Cruz, JJ Heffernan, Eric Aaron, Ben Williams and Aidan O'Brien.
"They are never going to come this way again," the coach said.
Moments after the game ended, Minder said he could not process the fact that he had just played his final football game at the Perkiomen School. The Red Hill resident sat out his sophomore season after undergoing foot surgery.
"It's disappointing for sure," Minder said.
