On May 24, Congressman Ryan Costello presented medals to James Fryer and his family of East Greenville whose father served over four years in the Army during World War II.
The late Master Sergeant Arthur Fryer served with the Army's 307th Airborne Engineer Battalion, having fought in Sicily, Italy, Germany and Normandy. Master Sgt. Fryer was enlisted from January 1941 to May 1945.
Congressman Costello and staff assisted Fryer's family in re-issuing the eight medals he had earned over 70 years ago after the original medals and paperwork were lost.
The awarded medals include; Army Good Conduct Medal; American Defense Service Medal, American Campaign Medal; European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with four bronze service stars; Honorable Service Lapel Button WWII; Expert Badge with the Submachine Gun Bar; Marksman Badge with Rifle Bar; and The Glider Badge.
The family went through several offices and many phone calls to receive the medals to maintain the history and memory of Master Sgt. Fryer.
"He didn't like to talk about it," commented James Fryer on his father's service. He stated the only story his father shared was his experience parachuting behind enemy lines on the night before the Normandy Invasion.
"We get phone calls from other people who are interested in their family," stated Congressman Costello on the awareness situations like this bring, "It raises public awareness and allows us to reconnect with our roots."
The medals will be displayed in the family home alongside the flag the family received at Master Sgt. Fryer's funeral.
