An unidentified man died in a fiery crash around 12:15 Saturday morning in 300 block of Main Street in Red Hill.

            According to a police report, a Marlborough Township police officer was attempting to pull over an erratic driver on Gravel Pike (Route 29) in Marlborough Township when the driver fled at a high rate of speed.  There was also a report that the vehicle had no license plate.

            As the speed of the fleeing vehicle increased the police officer terminated the chase.  Some reports have the fleeing vehicle reaching a speed of 105 mph.

            The speeding vehicle continued on Main Street into Red Hill, past Second Street where, after failing to negotiate a slight bend in the road, it struck a utility pole and traveled for another block, spewing debris along Main Street until it came to a stop at a second utility pole and adjacent to a home in the 300 block.

            The car burst into flames with the driver trapped inside.  The fire was so intense it melted vinyl siding at the home.   

            The Marlborough police officer notified State Police and continued to travel north on Route 29 when he came upon the scene of the accident.  The officer, who was not named, made several attempts to rescue the driver who was pinned in the vehicle.  An officer from the Upper Perk Police responded and helped with the evacuation of the resident in the home.

            Fire and rescue units were dispatched from Red Hill and arrived in minutes.  A rescue unit from Pennsburg also responded.  Emergency medical services units from Upper Perkiomen, Harleysville and Gilbertsville also responded.

            Fire police from at least six companies, including Red Hill, Pennsburg, Green Lane, Hereford, Upper Salford, and Seisholtzville also responded and closed Main Street from Sixth Street to Second Street while police conducted an investigation.  

            Main Street was re-opened around 7:30 a.m.
