A Pottstown man died after his car collided with an SUV at the intersection of Ridge Road and Sumneytown Pike in Upper Salford Township Tuesday morning.
State police said Mark Horneij, 56, of Pottstown, was on Ridge Road at the stop sign in a tan Ford Taurus around 10:04 a.m. when he failed to yield to traffic and pulled out to turn left onto Sumneytown Pike. Police said the Taurus traveled into the path of a westbound GMC Envoy, driven by Joseph Rocco, 61, of Collegeville.
The vehicles collided and the impact left Horneij trapped inside, authorities said. Upper Salford Fire Company personnel worked to free him but he was later pronounced dead at the scene. He was not wearing a seatbelt, according to authorities.
The Montgomery County Coroner's Office responded to the location. An autopsy is scheduled to be performed this week, according to officials from that office.
Police said Rocco sustained minor injuries but refused medical treatment at the scene.
State police had Sumneytown Pike closed for several hours to conduct a crash investigation. Upper Salford Fire Company and Fire Police were on scene until after noon.
Tylersport and Harleysville fire companies, along with Plymouth EMS and Harleysville Area EMS assisted at the scene.
