A Telford man was killed after his Ciocca parts delivery van collided with a car at the intersection of Geryville Pike and E. Buck Road in Upper Hanover Township Monday afternoon at what emergency responders are calling one of the worst accidents at the location in a long time.
State police said Donald Anders, 79, was north on Geryville Pike in a Ford transit van when a Chrysler 200, driven by 88-year-old Marguerite Fadil, of East Greenville, didn't stop at the stop sign on E. Buck Road and plowed into his vehicle.
After impact, Pennsburg Fire Chief Scott Seip said the van was pushed into a utility pole at the corner of W. Buck Road and Geryville Pike, and after t-boning the van with its front end, the Chrysler spun around ended up underneath the van.
Authorities said the rear end of the Chrysler was under the van and held it about five feet up in the air at the scene. Fadil, according to fire personnel, suffered minor injuries including a possible broken arm, and was taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital – Cedar Crest by Harleysville Area EMS.
Seip said Anders sustained severe internal injuries and was "heavily entrapped from the waist up" due to the intrusion of the pole approximately three feet into the van, which made the rescue challenging.
It took firefighters about 45 minutes to cut him out of the vehicle using ladders and hydraulic tools, including the jaws of life. An air medical helicopter was on standby but Anders was taken by Upper Perkiomen Ambulance to St. Luke's Hospital in Quakertown, where he died.
East Greenville Fire Company assisted at the scene, and Milford Red Hill, Quakertown and Harleysville fire police units assisted with diverting traffic in the area.
The fire companies remained on scene until about 3 p.m. and the roadway was reopened shortly before 5 p.m.
