Marlborough Township Police arrested a 24-year-old East Greenville man for stalking and related offenses after they reportedly found him soaking wet in the woods surrounding his ex-girlfriend's home Dec. 25.
Jonathan Paul Christy, of the 500 block of Blaker Drive in East Greenville, remains in Montgomery County jail on stalking, public drunkenness and harassment charges after he left a threatening voicemail message on his ex-girlfriend's cell phone and called her multiple times from 2:47 a.m. through 3:21 a.m.
According to a criminal complaint filed by Ofc. Andrew Curtis, police were called to the woman's home on Swamp Creek Road in the township around 6:15 p.m. Dec. 25 after her father called police. The family expressed concern for their wellbeing and said they did not feel safe in the house because they believed that Christy could be in the area, court papers said.
Curtis said he listened to the threatening voicemail message, which indicated Christy was "intoxicated and extremely unstable." During the message, Christy reportedly told the woman he was crazy and stated that he was a felon.
The brother of the woman told police he heard someone whistling to him from about 30 feet away from the home in the woods that night.
Police said Upper Perk and Lower Salford police responded to the scene and began searching the both township parks along the Unami Creek on Swamp Creek Road. Authorities said Curtis identified Christy's white Jeep Cherokee in one of the parks, blocked the vehicle in and took Christy into custody. Another officer on scene said it appeared that Christy was trying to leave the area in a hurry, but had backed into a boulder with his vehicle as he attempted to escape.
According to Curtis, Christy was soaked and had either been in the rain for a long time or had swum across the Unami Creek. He was wearing all dark clothing and was in possession of a Sheffield multi-tool knife when taken into custody. Both parks were closed during the time of the incident. Christy was unable to explain why his car was there or why he was away from his vehicle, police said.
Curtis said in the police affidavit that Christy was intoxicated with glassy, blood shot eyes and there was an odor of alcohol coming from his breath. Christy was also slurring his speech and unsteady on his feet, court papers said.
Christy has reportedly been under investigation for a number of incidents in the area lately. According to the police affidavit, Upper Perk Police told Christy to leave the same woman alone after leaving 28 voicemails on her phone Nov. 10. That same night, Christy was seen in the area shortly after the tires were slashed on a vehicle belonging to a male friend of the ex-girlfriend. Another tire-slashing incident occurred around 12:30 p.m. Dec. 24 and a witness saw Christy leaving the area shortly after the crime occurred, police said.
In 2010, he was charged with statutory sexual assault and aggravated indecent assault of a 13-year-old girl, among other offenses related to incidents occurring in 2009 and 2010. That case was transferred this August to Berks County Court.
He also pleaded guilty to charges of stalking, harassment and disorderly conduct and was sentenced in 2011 to probation on those charges. Also in 2011, he was sentenced to one year of probation for a trespassing charge after he led Upper Perk Police on a foot pursuit through the Upper Perkiomen Middle School property attempting to evade arrest.
Earlier this month, Christy was also charged with making false reports to law enforcement, a misdemeanor, in Bechtelsville.
He remains in jail following an arraignment by Magisterial District Judge Henry J. Schireson, who set bail at $10,000, 10 percent. He is scheduled to appear in Red Hill District Court for a preliminary hearing Jan. 5 at 1:30 p.m.
