Man Charged With Plowing Into Pennsburg Porch, Injuring Resident
Written by Kelly Chandler Staff Writer
2015-10-28

A Milford Township man was charged this week with driving under the influence and recklessly endangering another person after he allegedly blacked out while behind the wheel and crashed into a Pennsburg apartment building.

Upper Perk Police said Kenneth Eicheldinger, 24, of the 2000 block of Barley Drive, had a blood alcohol level of .19 shortly after driving into the porch of the former Pennsburg Hotel in the 500 block of Main Street in Pennsburg Sept. 13.  According to a criminal complaint in the case, Eicheldinger's blood also came back positive for amphetamine and THC, a metabolite of marijuana.

Around 3:48 a.m., police said Eicheldinger was north on Main Street in a 2007 Subaru Legacy when he admitted to blacking out before crossing over the opposing lane, jumping the curb and striking the building.  Police said a resident was on the porch at the time and had to jump out of the way to avoid being hit.  That resident reportedly suffered leg injuries and was transported to Lehigh Valley Hospital by Upper Perkiomen Valley Ambulance.

According to court documents, Eicheldinger's car crashed into the porch, causing it to collapse, and then hit a fire hydrant, shearing it off at the base.  The car's engine compartment then caught on fire.  That fire was put out by a resident with a fire extinguisher, police said.

Authorities said Eicheldinger admitted to drinking a combination of beer and liquor that night prior to the crash.  He was charged with DUI, highest rate, DUI, controlled substances, DUI, general impairment and recklessly endangering another person, all misdemeanors.

He is scheduled to appear in Red Hill District Court on Dec. 1 at 2 p.m. for a preliminary hearing in front of Judge Catherine Hummel Fried.
