Joel Williams scored the decisive goal with less than a minute remaining in the second overtime period Monday for the Upper Perkiomen boys water polo team, then added another tally for good measure in the final seconds of a 13-11 victory over Perkiomen Valley.
The Indians celebrated their first victory in the series in four years, in their first overtime game of the current season, by posing for a poolside photo.
"We really wanted this win," said Williams, a sophomore.
Mitchell Cairns finished with a team-high six goals. Williams added five goals and Christian Zera recorded 12 saves for Upper Perkiomen, which scored the final three goals in regulation to rally from a 10-7 deficit.
"That's the farthest we've come back all season," Williams said.
Though neither team scored during the first of two, three-minute overtime periods, the Indians outscored visiting Perkiomen Valley 3-1 in the second extra period.
Williams snapped an 11-11 tie with 55 seconds remaining. He capped the scoring as time expired to secure the victory for Upper Perkiomen, which competes in the Pennsylvania Scholastic Water Polo Association.
"The overtime is fun, especially when everyone gets really focused," Williams said. "We all clicked together and pulled it out."
With three weeks remaining in the season, the Indians are peaking, according to Katelyn Hansen, in her first season as head coach of Upper Perkiomen's boys and girls water polo teams.
"The boys are playing very well," said Hansen, a special education teacher in the Perkiomen Valley School District who won a PIAA state water polo championship as a player with Erie McDowell High School in 2004. "They are on a streak."
Hansen said she expects the team to compete for the PSWPA's Central Conference title. The coach did not rule out a berth in the state tournament.
"If we keep playing well, I think we are in position to get there," Hansen said.
The Upper Perkiomen boys are led by four seniors, according to the coach. She said Jared Saner, Tyler Reed, Zera and Cairns have provided significant leadership in and out of the pool.
"They have taught the underclassmen the skills to play this game," Hansen said. "I can only do so much from the deck."
Next year's team will miss the quartet, according to the coach.
"I'm not sure how I am going to replace them," she said. "Hopefully next year our numbers will increase."
Upper Perkiomen's girls water polo team lost 13-3 to the Vikings earlier Monday. Bailey McCausland, Madison Cairns and Kathryn Bieler scored in the loss.
